Growing Pains of a Friendship

I jumped into the car happily greeting my friends;

I received silence in return.

I attempted to contribute to the enclosed words whispered next to me;

I received no response in return.

I gave them music, jokes, my inputs, and interests;

I received ignorance in return.

I couldn’t fathom why I was being snubbed,

I felt as if I was a bypass around their fascinating and unwelcoming city.

I came to the realization that as I was finding interest in art, politics, and music

They were invested in high school relationships.

They were invested in “who was with who”,

They were invested in the social media scene,

They dedicated their lives to images that people would see

While I dedicated mine to the meaning behind philosophies.

Growing out of friends is easy to say-

But the hardest thing is to pass by their house every day,

To see the conversations in which you didn’t have a say,

Or to not be invited when they went out to play.

As one grows wiser, you realize you're worth.

It’s not defined by your status, your following, your looks.

It’s defined by the knowledge and attitude you uphold

When the people around you have lost their sense in this world.
