Grown
Grown.
A job and a dog and a
Home of your own
Is what I thought of
I knew I was strong
But all the ways I was wrong
Were never so clear
Until I lost
You think service is worthless
Until you’ve worked for it
The reason you exist
It’s up to you to determine it
The first time I fought and lost
I remembered the man
Who told me “life is just a fight until you understand”
Yeah,
I start to think of all the things I took advantage of
All the cities I could have built
If I thought I was good enough
I saw that all my cash was really liquid when it comes to it
How fast it flows through my hands
How fast the hunger really hits
All the things you think you wanted until the work shows you the way
Ten dollars for a coffee, damn that’s my hour’s pay
Broken budgets and sleepless nights really teach you to appreciate
The little things, like
Putting kale in my fridge and actually eating it
Realizing I’m not invincible
And I’m to old to keep faking it
The first wrinkles on my forehead,
Maybe they’re just battle scars
Reminding me the clock is ticking
And that I’ve come so far
The first time I worked in a nursing home
I came to be grateful for
My freedom, mobility, agility
All the things I have, but could not afford
Now I know that nothing’s really meaningless
I give my life meaning, it’s up to me to keep feeding it
My flow, my glow
It’s all under my control
What does it mean to be grown?
I think I finally know
Grown
With a loan
A car and a house
And a life I don't
Own
Life will never be perfect.
My goal?
Every year, grow wiser
Every day, glow brighter
