The Growth of Me

Who am I?

Struggling to get up,

To crawl, I keep going.

I scream in frustration,

Cry in desperation.

Who am I?

Crawling was hard.

Walking is so easy.

Faster and Faster

I go.

Walking, then running,

Faster

Faster,

Faster.

Nothing can slow me down

Or keep me grounded.

Who am I?

Suddenly, I am

Falling.

Running so hard,

I trip.

Down face first

to the cold hard ground.

I cry out in tribulation.

Sharp cuts of gravel

digging into my palms

turn red and bleed.

Tears run down

my round cheeks.

Who am I?

I stay down for a minute

then get up.

But there is

No fun in running

When my feet are not free.

An invisible ball and chain

Holds me down

On the desolate ground.

Who am I?

So I take one step

then stumble.

Then I take another step,

and fall again.

Hopelessness wears me down.

Why walk when all I will do is fall?

Who am I?

But where will I go if

I can go no place but here?

There is nothing here for me,

only the depression and sorrow.

The feelings that I never had any use for.

Who am I?

The phrase keeps repeating in my mind.

Who am I?

Who am I?

I pick my feet back up and try again.

I stumble,

Then stumble again.

But this time it’s easier,

I Smiled.

Maybe I still can be free.

Who am I?

I am Determination

And Freedom.

I won’t give up,

I preserve.

I learned to never give up,

And to smile on.

I learned to stumble until I ran.

But most importantly,

I learned who I am.
