Guard dog

I got that dog in my heart,
It barks so loud, it tears apart.
Shielding me from the world outside,
Guarding my soul, where secrets hide.
It makes me angry, makes me bite,
But I don’t want to fight this fight.

It growls at shadows, snaps at light,
Pushing people out of sight.
I don’t mean to be this way,
But the dog’s control, it won’t obey.
It makes me aggressive, sharp and cold,
A heart that’s locked, a heart that’s bold.

I don’t want to hurt or chase,
But the dog’s in charge, it sets the pace.
I don’t want to bite, to tear, to break,
But the dog inside is wide awake.
I wish it’d sleep, just for a while,
Give me peace, let me smile.

But the dog keeps barking, loud and strong,
Fighting battles that don’t belong.
I’ve got that dog in my heart,
And sometimes, it’s tearing me apart.
