Guardian Angel
I write to you, my Protector,
Who has kept me safe, though a spectre
You, so angelic in nature,
Watched me grow and mature
Into a person whom, I hope, will do you proud.
We have been through so much together,
Through rain and shine and terrible weather.
When I encountered a bullsnake,
You deterred it, made its spirit quake.
When I drove into a ditch two hours after midnight,
Or,
When I skidded sideways down the highway at fifty-five,
You kept my mother from feeling such misery and spite.
When my future as a soldier was vague,
You lead me on the path I could endure.
Guardian Angel, in my mind you're so elegant.
I imagine around me your wings so extravagant.
I envision you dressed in white
So bright
You dazzle me into awe.
You guide me into my future,
And when my heart bleeds, you're my suture.
If I could ask you one question,
It would be a humble suggestion.
I would like to know your name.
I'm not asking for much,
It's just - not knowing's a shame.
That way I can properly thank you
For it was me you never outgrew.
I know I am a handful at times.
I curse and sin and cause such roguish crimes.
I think I often drive you mad
But please, I don't want you to be sad.
You know me better than anyone.
You know my deepest secrets and my dismal thoughts.
I live to enjoy life and have some fun.
So, I mind as well be in space as an astronaut!
Because, yes I dare say, I am out of this world.
