The Guy
I wish just once I could be the guy, you know?
I wish I could be the guy who’s confident enough to care how people feel and not what they think
The guy who is emotional because he’s human and not suppressed because of who man is
The guy who looks at strangers as friends he hasn’t yet met
And who's greatest fear is being afraid rather than his fears themselves
Who climbs higher by never looking down
The guy who always does the right thing even when it’s hard
And not just how hard is spoken of after it’s over like it was easy
But when it’s truly hard
And the moment blurs the line between right and wrong
And shows you who you are and who you truly want to be
I wish I could be the guy who knows who he is in that moment
And at the very least I want to be the guy who swings and misses because at least he swung
At least he took his shot and he’s going to look back on life and know that he lived
Because how many of us actually get to be alive before we die
But I’m just not him
I want to be so badly
And at times it holds enough pressure to make diamonds and maybe that’s why it’s so hard
But I look through a mirror that shows a reflection sharper than the man who holds it
And I look through the tinted lenses of glasses that polarize a split conscience
A conscience that turns to darkness when shade is present
And I see a shadow of that guy
Made worse when I shine my brightest
Yet still fall short
Trailing behind a hero I’ll never hope to catch
Who captures flashes of potential
Framing a picture of the guy i could never be
