Habitual Action

Habitual Action
Very quietly silently barefooted slip
Into the long dark hallway
Carefully, quietly make a path
To the shadowy bookshelf
Over there in that corner
Read the words by flashlight
In bed with the covers pulled up
And the sound of your heartbeat in the night

Make yourself a nest of blankets
And pile the books around
Render your voice a whisper
Imbued with quiet purpose as you voice
Each word and sentence and chapter

Kindly, gently turn each page
In the warm glow of the flashlight
Night may press its charcoal face
Stealthily against the window pane
Each story and poem is a barrier against him
Yawn, and fall asleep in this forest of words
