Half My Brain

Half of my brain would do me just fine you see,

Some live just fine like that all their lives,

They sit and sit and sit and sit sit sit until they sit and sit some more,

You see this might seem an awful and terrible thought,

But, I was once asked the question about a deserted island,

You know? The one they always ask about what would be the one thing to bring?

Well I would bring half my brain.

Imagine that? Getting surgery to remove half of your brain?

I would do it if I was never going to leave the island,

But, I wouldn’t get the surgery that takes aways all thoughts,

I’d have those doctors tweak the little things,

Get rid of fear; Get rid of feelings; Get rid of my memory of the past,

Because the past is a terrible thing,

To be stranded and think of your family and your friends,

To know they are still living their life, but without a crucial part,

To know you will never see them again,

That is torture.

This seems gory, a girl wanting to rip an organ right from her body,

But, it is going to remove my fears,

Fear of dark; Fear of an animal attacking me; Fear of the unknown,

If I was running across an island being chased by a wild animal, this would help,

I wouldn’t fear the animal, I would face it and fight it off,

At night in the pitch black, I would not tremble in fear,

I would get a wonderful sleep in and wake up rejuvenated,

My half a brain doesn’t seem so terrible now.

Take what you will to this imaginary island,

For honestly it does not matter to me at all,

It’s just a provoking thought in our minds,

One that for some reason is visited all the time,

In the form of essays, and poems, and questions that get tedious and repetitive,

But, they will help us to understand where we stand with our own content,

And what we feel we can stand to leave behind,

For me this is half my brain and all of the memories that go with it,

So I will not suffer.
