Hands

My father’s hands were never there…

Never cuddled me

Never protected me

They were never there

When I broke my arm they didn’t heal me

When I fell off my bike

They didn’t help me up

I never knew how wrinkled they were,

Or if they had any wisdom

They were never there

They never fought monsters under the bed

They never wrapped gifts for my birthdays

They never helped me study

They were never there

They never helped me practice my guitar

Or even my karate

They never rocked me to sleep

They were never there

When I wanted attention,

         They shewed me away

When I needed him most,

        They drove away

My father’s hands were never there…
