Happily Ever After
I thought life was going to be
Like a Disney movie.
Not that I, or some prince,
Would have to fight an evil being;
More that I would get married and live
Happily ever after.
Then it comes to people actually dating.
I’m confused.
Why are people doing this?
We’re in middle school!
Do they hate themselves?
Now we’re in the human growth
And development unit. The teacher keeps
Talking about all these feelings we’re supposed to have.
And I’m lost.
Am I the only one who has
No idea what she’s talking about?
That’s when I learn a word.
Asexual.
People who have
No sexual attraction.
I know I’m fourteen but
I start to cry. I have never felt
Less alone in my life. I have
Found a home. A community.
Then other words show up.
Aromantic.
People who have
No romantic attraction.
That’s not me,
Because at this point
I’ve had one crush.
Everyone around me seems to fall in
Love in two days.
It took me months to even start liking this person!
Then I see words like aromantic.
Demiromantic.
A person who only
Experiences romantic attraction
After an emotional bond has been created.
That defines me to a T!
A couple years later I get another crush.
This time it’s a girl.
Can you be bi on top of all of these labels?
It turns out you can.
Your identity can be as complex as you are.
Now I don’t want a Disney movie life.
I love Disney, don’t get me wrong,
But I have an independent idea for my life.
Maybe I won’t get married, however,
I have no doubt that because I know myself
My happily ever after will come.
