Happily Never After

They say true love's kiss

will break any spell,

cure any sickness,

make all well.

But does it work in reverse?

If your true love hurts you

breaks not your heart, but soul

where have you to turn then?

your chest-- an empty hole.

A once giddy heart, now malignant chamber;

melodious at start, now dissonant shame.

There is no other's affection

to halt the pain as it gets worse;

no vaccine or medication

to slow or cease this blessed curse.

And so I bask in self-pity,

rinse my spirit with my eyes.

'Cause this unreal eternal unity

leaves me sadly ever after…
