Happiness

Through the mud

I trudge,

With a burden I must bear

(Though in my heart there beats

                A drum,

The drum of liberation from despair)

Through the sand

I push,

With the load of all my cares,

Through the water

I wade,

With the weight of all my sorrow

                (Though in my heart

                The river of blood

                With strength and defiance glows)

Through the heat

Of the glaring sun,

I fend off Remorse’s blows

Then at last,

Long, long last

I come to the land of rest

                (When at last

                I trust

That it’s my heart that knows what’s best)

Then at once,

All at once

I remove these burdens from my chest,

And finally

I breathe

Air that tells me I am free

(For in my heart there rings

                A bell,

                The bell of liberty)

And Happiness,

That joyful soul,

At last, he dwells in me.
