Happy Endings

I am tethered to the shore

An elastic rope binds my ankle

I swim as fast as possible to the bottom of the abyss

but the elastic is stretched to its extent

I scream with my last breaths trying to reach the bottom of the ocean

I know I never will

Yet this reality is better than the latter

That I must die on shore

In the reality of my life as it must be lived

In a world where I cannot breath

My breaths ragged and jagged

Choking on emotions unfathomable

Everywhere I turned in the world made me squeamish and uncomfortable

No one was my friend

All were scrutinized and given no benefit of the doubt

But my enemies were closing in

I could do nothing but run

And when I found out that they could run with me

That they could run faster than me

I decided to swim

Yet my enemies were watching and waiting for me

and bound my leg as I tried to swim away

I tried swimming harder to break the elastic

but the idea was feeble at best.

Now, the bottom of the ocean is nowhere to be seen

All is black and dark around me

There is no escaping my alternate reality

They will win and I will lose

There will be no happy ending

There never was one to begin with
