This is a Happy Poem

I am writing a happy poem because

Far too many people complain that I write too many sad ones.

They say when they see me I am sunshine and rainbows

And wonder where these poems come from.

But they don’t understand

The constant hospital trips

The constant poking of an IV

The constant cries of the babies on the oncology floor.

“Oh, who cares? Better them than you.

As long as you’re happy, they don’t matter;

They’ll be fine anyways,

You should focus on being happy.”

But positivity has become a monster following me.

I can convince myself that I am happy

That life is good.

But that doesn’t seem to mean much anymore.

I’m happy to be alive..

I’m happy to have a team of nurses keeping me alive.

But no one would be happy as they’re diagnosed with cancer.

No one would be happy to need a team of nurses.

So yes, I’m truly sorry that I am not as happy as you wish.

But not everything is about you, is it?

If writing these poems makes the days in the hospital go by faster,

Then I am doing what I can to be the “happy” you like.

So, I am as happy as I can be.

And you are as happy as you can be.

But focus on how you’re feeling

Don’t compare your strife to mine.

As the pain olympics are only fun if no one wins.

This is my happy poem.

It is as happy as I am at this moment.

I would like to see you write a happy poem;

You can see how they compare.

But, beware. Never tell someone to be happy, or sad, or angry.

Because that is simply not fair.
