Happy Sleep

Between Mr. Uncle Bob's lawn mover

and creaking rusty hooks

on the front porch swing crying out

while bare feet dangle in suspension below

and the waves roll in

gently on the seawall

crafts a sweet lullaby

denim short on wind-worn blanks

with 5 o'clock sun on my cheeks

and salt tangled in my hair

and the sand on my tanned toes

pulls me into a happy sleep

and my head doesn't know that the rest of the world

cannot hear the sweet lullaby

they do not know the happy sleep.
