Hard Headed Views.
Why is it our society sees two kinds of people?
They either see white or black, stupid or smart, severely disabled or a “normal” kid.
Why do we see things in twos?
Is there no middle ground for mentally disabled kids? The kids who have some skills, they just need a little extra help?
These kids do not need to be stuck in a class with children who can’t do anything by themselves. That is a whole different area of disability.
But the middle ground cannot be with the “normal” kids either because the disabled students don’t understand as quickly, and cannot keep up with whats going on.
So where is the middle ground?
Where are the people who care about the kids who have at least a little independence?
I know there are disabled students out there that are in the middle, and they are stuck with children who are completely dependent on someone else. Learning the littlest things that subtly say:
“We’re giving up on you, here is how you should do laundry and cook food.”
It is sad and horrible that some of these kids have to regress back to these life skills they already know.
I know there are kids out there who do not deserve or belong in these classes, kids who are in the middle, who need to move forward, not back.
I know this, because I live with one.
