Hard work pays off

I saw it in my dad

He’s been working since the age of 6

In the good times and the bad

My dad worked on a farm

With his family of 14

Having no food or money

Their bodies were so lean

Some days they had rice

Some days they had nothing

But whether they had something

They never did stop working

Hard work pays off

I saw it in my dad

With no money for an education

He worked hard to get that

My dad went through school

With high honors every year

He was pinned number one in his class

His mom was always in tears

Finally at high school graduation

My dad won so many awards

His mom almost fainted

And fell to the floor

Hard work pays off

I saw it in my dad

He became valedictorian

And went to college glad

My dad became the only child

In his family to graduate college

And become a registered nurse

Because of his knowledge

He passed his exams

And got his green card

To America he went

Because he worked hard

Hard work pays off

I saw it in my dad

The only child to go to the United States

Because he worked with what he had

The reason why my dad worked so hard

Was to have a better life

For his kids to have an education

Without going through so much strife

Now here I am

Fresh with my diploma

Ready to go to college

And make proud my daddy and mama

I too have to work hard

In good times and the bad

Because I know hard work pays off
