Hate to Break the News
I am your truthful conscience
I hate to break the news, but...
You are more than the black and white profile picture.
You don't have flawless skin,
Nor do you have 673 friends on Facebook.
No one likes that "selfie" you took at 3:28 pm.
Eventually your brother and best friend liked it,
But you wanted the whole world to like it.
Actually love it.
Hate to break the news, but
How is the world going to love you
when you don't love you?
So why cover it all up?
I double dog dare you love yourself!
And just watch
People will like you.
Not by double tapping on their touch screen,
But by hanging out with you,
Asking you for your makeup advice,
Asking you to be their friend.
I hate to break the news, but...
You're a great friend
And the best painter
And the best at applying makeup
Everyone loves your jokes
And the silliness you produce.
Love your empathy,
And optimism,
And that intellectual philosophy you developed over the years.
You can't see any of that through a photoshopped picture.
So why do you take the effort to cover your zits and frizzy hair?
Is this making you upset?
GOOD!
You better take this to heart
And love yourself when I'm through with you!
Because I hate to break it to you,
You are loved by your family and friends
Because you are smart.
Because you are beautiful.
What more do want?
You can't wait for the world to love you.
You just have to suck it up
And love yourself.
Please.
