Hawk

Icy feathers of air
Stream into the hawks’ wings
As he plunges

Feathers plummet
Sharp talons hit the body of
a pigeon
Like needles they puncture
Tear into feathery flesh
And both bodies roll
In currents of wind.

Their white fates
Rise to meet them
Two birds
Plunging
Into deep snow.

The hawk hungry
Talons grasping air
Ice stinging
His fierce eyes
Almost tasting
The flesh in his beak
That would warm his frozen bones.

Pigeon
Bleeding
Thoughts racing
Life flashing
Before bright orange eyes
The world
So much bigger
Feet pressed against the earth

Heart thumping fast
Lunging into snow
A dark bush lies ahead
Safety so close
So close..
So close..

A flash of color
Burst of noise
Snow crunching
Breath billowing
A girl
Spies soft feathers and
Dark blood.

Wings spread open
Trailing scarlet
Pigeon
Stumbles under dark green leaves
And hawk catches the wind
With a harsh cry
Of defeat.
