Head in the Clouds

The sky was self-conscious- she'd always been
She'd change her form just to fit in
She'd keep her head way up in the clouds
So no one could see the scars she hid
Because nobody knew that the sky was sick
And she'd pray that this bout would be over quickly
But she knew that it wouldn't as the pain would come prickling
And she'd cover her face as the tears would come trickling
And people would hide when she cried out in pain
Because nobody ever likes thunder or rain
"I'm sorry," she'd call but they'd still run away
"I've ruined such a beautiful, bright sunny day."
So she lowered her cries to a rumbling groan
Pain should be solitary- only felt on your own

And then he came along.
Mr. Moon appeared beside her whistling the sweetest song
With a smile that lasted the whole night long-
He intrigued her
So she tried to do that too,
Tried whistling like him but she didn't know how to
Tried smiling like him but found out how hard it is to
When everything in you burns like fire, and then you
Want to be just like them but you know you
Aren't

But he smiled at her with his kind eyes-
They were eyes that saw straight through her cloud-disguise
"Why are you hiding?" he looked at her, smiling
"You should come out and talk for a while, we
Could probably have some great conversation
And until you're ready I'll be over here patient-ly
Waiting."

So she slowly pointed her face his direction
And when he saw her he couldn't hide his affection
"You're beautiful, I've never seen such perfection
From the gleam in your eyes to your clear complexion-
There's no one like you, not to my recollection
And from this day forward, you're under my protection
I promise."

She shook her head and backed away
"There's no way I'd ever ask you to stay
I'm sick, and you shouldn't have come my way and
If you leave now, you can get far away-"

"Hey," he stopped her.
"You think I'll leave you this way?
I'll be with you every day
And even if this pain never goes away
You're gonna be okay
Because I'm here to stay
Okay?
Don't be embarrassed of all of your scars
Because they helped to make you just who you are
In fact, let's call them stars because they bring out your light
They're the only reason I found you tonight
Look at them, Sky. They're beautiful."

The sky was self-conscious. She'd always been
But for once she didn't feel like she had to fit in
So she took his hand and stepped out from the clouds
And lit everything up with the light that she'd given
And he saw her that way, he couldn't hide his affection
There was no one like her, not to his recollection
And from that day forward she was under his protection
Because he promised.
