Heart Donor

Dear butcher:

You take from me my heart on the nights you lay beside me.

You cut with steady hands-- pry open my ribs--

Produce your cherry fruit and savor between your lips;

An abandoned home you have made the cavity of my chest.

I, your willing sacrifice, die again each day.

I lent you my heart, all the love I can possess.

You have given to him the borrowed feeling.

You once said if only he could give me what it is he has between his legs.

Sincerely,

Your lamb.
