Heart Strings
a pull at the heart strings
the last few threads holding them together
he was supposed to reinforce those seams
he promised to fix me
he said he’d make the pain go away
instead he numbed my senses
now I can’t tell, without my senses
just how weak they’ve become, my heart strings
and I cannot just wish him away
he tells me we’re better together
but he never asks me
and now I’m ripped at the seams
who will repair these torn up seams
who will show me all my senses
when I tried to do what was best for me
he held on to me like a puppet’s strings
“because I love you”, he said, “we’ll stay together”
I didn’t know how to push him away
it takes unfathomable strength to get away
especially with so many open seams
but he had an estranged perception of together
ignoring my senses
pulling, yanking at my heart strings
do not tell me he loved me
when I finally focused on me
forcing his empty promises away
he left me brittle, frayed strings
he left me aching seams
with no conception left of my senses
a dark shadow over our time together
in the aftermath, there is no more together
it is only me
without him, I have regained my senses
I have the strength to push him away
I have the strength to patch up these seams
I’ve tied knots in my heart strings
I can no longer trust my senses to keep me away
from something so painful; us together, him and me
I could not feel the rips in my seams, the pull at my heart strings
