Hearts

Fragile hearts are torn, papers scatter across the floor

Children whisper as birds fly

Numb hands reach out looking for warmth

People say that these things don't matter

White picket fences, pristine lawns

Families smiling into phones to pose for the picture

Loud voices in the kitchen about finances

New-born babies crying for their mothers

Stiff objects hanging in empty rooms

Teenagers contemplating how to get out of their homes

Green cars, black skies, and bright stars

What are we doing? Why are we running?

What is our story? How are we going to live it?
