Hegelian Dialectic

 Change

The word slowly etching the walls of my heart

Forever imprinting its impact on me

As I gaze at newspaper after newspaper

Realizing too quickly that my world has turned 180 degrees

The change that has made me believe that I no longer live in the utopian society

I believed the Greatest Country in the World to be

Instead I am entering a dystopian novel, one wrenched with violence

The fear I feel when I hear the announcements crackle to life

The gentle voice of the principal confirming my greatest fears

The death of yet another student. The death of yet another faculty member.

Somewhere across the country.

And, yet so close to me

That I feel Death.

Breathing on me.

A testimony to all the lives lost for no good reason.

Reminding me never to forget.

What times are we living in?

I stare at the fall leaves. Falling. Dead, Crumpled and Brown. One after the other.

Until none are left.

Why are we mindlessly killing each other? Destroying the human race.

Destroying the human spirit.

Why cannot it be spring? Flowers blooming. Happiness.

Why cannot it be a change that will impact

The world in a positive way

A change that we will remember always

A peaceful change

When we close Pandora’s box together

Trapping all the evils inside.

When will better days come?

The change that has destroyed us

Will one day come again

Rescuing us from its own evil clutches
