Hello Up There

Hello up there

Can you hear me?

It's me

your old friend

We've been here so long

could you have forgotten?

It's always been me and you

Most often when I go

you come too

we've found that being friends

is good for us

I need you

and you need me

We keep each other safe,

occupied, distracted,

and alive

On good days

we laugh

On bad days

we cry

On okay days

we keep breathing

You are like a magic bag

full of different tricks

there's thoughts and worries

dreams and nightmares

hopes and fears

ideas and questions

everything we need

We can huddle up

and fly to the moon

or visit a distant galaxy

We can stay at home

and paint and sing

and have a tea party

We can run a marathon

or win a championship game

We can discover a new element

conceive a philosophical idea

or write a story

We can do anything

so long as we can think it

together

Sometimes we just sit

listening for hours

to the world around us

in it, we find peace

a peace I do not know

without you

In every storm of life

I need you there

to help me through

and without you

I'd never last

So as far as you go

I'll go too

Without you

my head is pretty empty

and my heart is pretty sad

and my life is pretty boring

me and my mind

I need you more than I could ever know
