There’s always too much homework

given by the teacher.

I never get any sleep.

All I do is study,

preparing for the future,

worrying about my grades.

Nothing’s more important than grades,

all of which are made up of tests, homework,

and quizzes. These determine my future.

I am the robot to the teacher,

who demands me to study

and causes me to lose sleep.

No matter how much I get, I can’t get enough—sleep.

Less sleep equals better grades,

so I must study

and do homework,

for the teacher—

for my future.

In the future,

I can sleep.

I’ll have no teacher

then. No one to pressure me about my grades.

No more worries, no more homework,

more time to play since I won’t have to study.

But for now, I need to study

because it’s dependent on my future.

When I get home today, I must start on my homework.

I won’t be able to sleep.

I must maintain my grades,

so I can impress the teacher.

Even this poem is assessed by the teacher—

I bet she doesn’t have to study . . .

or care about grades.

She already has her future.

I bet she gets eight hours of sleep.

How jealous I am that she doesn’t have homework!

I dream of the future, when I can finally sleep,

for I won’t have any homework, I won’t have to study,

I won’t have any teachers; I’ll already have the grade.
