Henrietta and Henry

I am a cliche

I’ve read the story of Henrietta lacks.

I’ve delved into the disparities of our people.
I was inspired to fight that injustice.

I strived to be come a doctor but, not just any doctor.
One that will deliver radiation with respect and dignity.

One who will guide our people through the journey of cancer.

I will protect what’s most precious to us, our black women.

As I was not prepared to protect what was most precious to me.

A black woman.

I am a legend like Henry.

Made to stand as tall as his tale.

Despite the disbelief, I swing my hammer against oppression.

I fight the machine of systemic doubt.

Obstacles are the pins which I will drive down with my hammer.

I build railways, the connections and foundations of this country.

I will communicate the true history, and shed light on the mighty, the fallen, and the resilient.

I am the manifestation of struggle mixed with the idealism of fables.

I am helplessness, I am hope, and I am honored.

I am Henrietta and Henry
