Here Comes the Sun

When I walk through these jungle city streets, I no longer walk with my head down

With the wind pushing each foot forward, my head always floats high above the clouds

The streets that whispered to me in my youth aren't staying so quiet anymore

Instead of their cautious whispers, the streets scream

They scream something new at me whenever I am willing to listen to what they have to say

Lately, they scream about how much I’ll miss these places and these people

How I’ll miss the love and the lies that I’m leaving behind,

All the nights spent trying to forget about the things we hate about ourselves

The same nights spent in different houses, the same broken promises and broken bottles

Only to end up in the back of an angel’s car as the sky glimmers in disapproval

I’ll miss the way suburbia flashes green and white if you drive by fast enough

I’ll miss the way the trees kept so many secrets for those of us that needed them to

Their branches must be filled with forbidden feelings and unspoken words

And still, I fear the day when my love for these perfect places slowly wilts into nostalgia

Not because these places will change or wither away with time

Or because I’ll find them ugly once I see the beauty in the rest of the world

I fear it because it will mean that my youth is no longer chasing after me, I’ll be the one chasing after it instead

For that, I’m trying to hold on to everything that makes me feel like I belong

The friends that I’ll keep and the friends I’ll let go

The hallways that won’t ever echo these same voices again, the floors we will never get to dance on

It’s all slipping through my fingers like grains of sand falling through an hourglass

Each one never letting me forget of how little time we have left

So please, don't forget the seeds that have made your lives bloom and the very people that refused to let those seeds die

Don’t forget about the days when you thought you lost it all or the days you were on top of the world

Don’t forget to hold onto the memories and feelings you think you won’t want

Because the truth is that you will want them one day

You’ll want them when you stare into the mirror and don’t recognize who stares back

You’ll want them in the moments as you watch the sun finally set on this age of life

Because who really knows what will be waiting for us when the sun comes up?

I don’t know what waits, but what I do know, is that I am facing towards it

I am facing toward the sun.
