Hidden Life

In the heat of a summer day

I walk my pooch to the tennis court in Dover Bay

Somewhere southeast in Wisconsin

A girl kneels in mud down to her shin

To investigate a trembling leaf

Hiding a small black thief

Who with a friend stole a crumb of bread

And into the shelter of green they fled

Now, as the thief is found

He and his friend bury deep into the ground

Safe from the danger above them

They carry away their little gem
