Hiding

Isn't it weird how you can sense when people have been broken? No matter how many facades they put up It's there Just skimming the surface And if they slip just so The fault lines flash into visibility And you can see that at some point in their lives Someone hurt them so badly that a part of them withdrew from the world Afraid to be discovered Cloaked in shame That hurt comes out as anger sometimes Bitterness to hide pain Because it is so much easier to put up a cold front than to show weakness Why put yourself out there to be hurt again? These people are like boxes Locked up tight But waiting Waiting for someone who can win their trust back Restore their faith in the world At the base of everyone's heart is the need to be trusted and to trust It forges a bond between people A bond that says "Don't worry. I will not let you fall."
