High Tide

From the beginning I knew something was wrong,

but because I loved you I overlooked it all.

At first it was subtle,

but now it’s plain to see,

your version of love,

tore down all of me.

It was an endless rise and fall,

like the pushing and pulling of the sea according to the moon’s call.

Low tide was calm,

no waves in sight,

but I was soon slipping into a riptide based on gravity’s plight.

How could you think that was the definition of love?

Because love isn’t forceful,

love is kind,

it’s not sprinting ahead while the other is falling far behind.

I know love isn’t easy,

it’s meant to be hard,

But that’s not an excuse to leave me broken in shards.

Love is euphoria,

pure delight,

it’s two against the world,

fighting for each other with all their might.

It’s having trust,

while being honest,

and even when things get tough,

love keeps on moving forward.

But now that we’re over,

I can finally see,

never,

not once,

did you ever really love me.
