His "Forever" Smell
Walking to work from here to there,
I noticed a smell that was in the air.
I stopped to recall where I knew this smell.
I thought about it long, only time could tell.
I proceeded to work at my dreadful job,
sat behind my desk as the clients mobbed.
I thought to myself this life is not right,
then dozed off to see my dreams in sight.
I was alone on a beach, so I turned to yell.
I stopped mid word on account of the smell.
I saw a man down the beach a fair way,
so I walked towards him thinking of what I should say.
As I got closer, he seemed to evaporate in thin air.
I slowly wondered if I was the only one there.
The smell got stronger as I started to awake,
and there stood a man with a smirk on his face.
I smiled from ear to ear then my heart beat fast.
It was an acquaintance I knew from back in the past.
We were a couple a few years back.
It was absolutely crazy how our lives were on track.
The smell was on his clothes, and was the smell of his home.
Every memory came back, and I wondered what had gone wrong.
We used to be perfect, we laughed till we cried,
but after a while our relationship died.
That was 20 years ago, and I haven’t moved on.
I’ve thought about him since, but it doesn’t seem that long.
He approached my desk, and I started to fret.
He looked just as good as the day that we met.
I said “hello” as he looked my way.
Then we started to talk and the time went away.
Papers stacked up, and the hours had passed.
But I did not care, he was here at last.
We made plans for a date, and he said “see you then.”
At that point I knew I had fell in love again.
I called it a day as I made my last sale,
and all I could think about was that sweet sweet smell.
