His Promise Set Me Free

I dragged my fingers across the leather

There lay all that was of me

My breath soon flew north past Never Land

It didn’t take long to finally believe

I opened up the book of old

I leaned my life was made anew

Before my heart belonged to things

How come I never turned to You?

I tried to find my life in those

With packs of skin so finely toned

Who charmed with words and promises

That never really filled me whole

I wish in times when darkness dwelled

I didn’t rely on him to see

But that I opened the Word collecting dust

And solely just relied on He

My youth consumed by fairytales

That ended not so happily

Goliath’s feet were stomping on

The plates below would stumble me

I read that David, oh so small

Defeated him with just belief

That I can make the mountains move

With just the smallest mustard seed

When I need knowledge, peace and calm

I gain my wisdom from the Psalms

I pray for signs of what to do

My fingers latched between my palms

So when I go back to the days

When nobody was there for me

I smile when I think of Christ

And how His promise set me free
