Holding Out

I like to think

about how difficult it would be

to breathe

without my current love

by me.

I like to think

about how hard life would be

without my family

surrounding me.

But in reality

it is not their presence

that I seek.

It is not truly their love,

but their own need.

As much as

I like to think

about how hard my life would be,

I would be just fine

without them

beside me.

Because in reality

all I really need

is someone

who misses me.

Someone to feel

the weight of my presence

lost.

Someone to call the cops,

someone to shed tears,

someone, who, years from now,

still thinks I will appear downstairs.

I like to think

about how difficult it would be

to breathe

without those who love me,

But honestly,

I just need to know

Are they still

Holding out for me?
