Deep in the desert of Mexico

Tucked into a valley

Of rolling hills

Lies my heart

My soul

My happiness

Colorful houses

Paint the horizon

Churches red and yellow

A garden

Nestled between cafes

And sweet stands

And cobblestone streets

Here I am complete

My family lives

My peace roams

My adventures unfurl

In my home away from home

Here I find freedom

(Though the country, not so free)

A when I go

When I get there

No crude memories

No more stress

Only hymns that sing heat

Of sweat across my skin

The patter of rain

On the tin roof

Under blue or grey skies

Or streaks of light

That shatter the heavens

All the broken promises

The painful rejections

The unanswered prayers

Wash away with the storm

And even now

After lines of love

There are still no right words

Nor are there words enough

To explain

All that I need

Are the colorful houses

The red and yellow churches

The cobblestone streets

Of my home away from home

Deep in the desert of Mexico

Tucked into a valley

Of rolling hills
