The Homeless Man
Stuck in traffic...
Your long threadbare coat riding the wind catches my eye
Probably ink black once, now turning rust with age
It glides in the wind like an eagle
Marvin Gaye's "What's Going On" plays
The eagle coat catches the rhythm
But how, my volume is very low
Traffic moves...
I see Mother Earth has braided your hair
It snakingly streams behind you in sync with your stride
The sun is your spotlight as you move
Did she know you would one day be this tallness? Does she ever wonder where you are?
Snake braids, eagle coat moving in rhythm
I'm mesmerized
We move...
I keep on looking
Broad shoulders, bulging biceps
Do you weight-lift the universe?
Leg muscles woven from hustling and pounding pavements
Straining against those too tight torn black jeans
Are those your toes? But aren't those tough Caterpillar boots?!
Traffic moves an inch...
I look in awe at the caringly chiselled face
My! She has hidden your hue quite well
Ivory and bronze, but golden with just a hazy coat of darkness
Eyes, the color of midnight sprinkled with stars
Flared nostrils, one could cry arrogance
I see she was generous with your lips
She knew you would need charm for survival
Traffic shifts a bit...
But wait, is that content I observe on your caringly chiselled face?
Your stride, you could be walking anywhere in the world
Are you really a homeless man
Or are you already home?
Traffic opens up.
