Homework

Dear HOMEWORK,

I’ve been your slave since the first day I entered a school building.

In kindergarten you were alphabet practice.

In first grade: about myself questionnaires

Second grade: Simple addition and subtraction. Writing.

Third Grade: Cursive practice.

Fourth Grade: Rough Drafts. Long Division.

Fifth Grade: First Essay

As middle school came, your intensity and time consuming nature hit me like a brick.

Sixth Grade: interactive notebooks, book projects, choir practice

Seventh Grade: art projects, science posters, US history

Eighth Grade: world geography, science experiments, study groups

High school has once again changed my view of you. I’m burdened by your oppressive nature. Yet, I’m addicted to you.

Ninth Grade: Foreign language, formal examinations, weekend homework

Tenth Grade: after school hours, group projects, AP classes, tears on my pillow, stress

What have I learned from you? Time management. Prioritization. Constant Engagement.

Appreciation. Preservation. Consequences vs. Rewards. Success. Satisfaction.

You, homework, are a built in part of me. Unnatural feelings come when you are not given to me. You are the reason for most of my emotions. You stress me out, and relieve my stress. You are a top priority. I fuss over you, and spend the most time with you. You’ve made me who I am.

Yours forever,

E.M.
