in honor of puerto rico

yesterday marked another year of national puerto rican day

an event that embodies the meaning of independence

where puerto rican men and women fought

so i can live

they paved the way so i can inspire my people to not fulfill stereotypes of drug dealers and wife beaters

the flag does not represent a picture

it's symbolizes freedom

where boriquens were once enslaved by christopher columbus

who was a mindless tourist wandering aimlessly

and used us to buy gold for his greed

puerto rico is an island

don't give a crap it's part of u.s. commonwealth

we are our own country

the sounds of the congas beating

the flag waving with pride embrace by the wind

the costumes originated by our fellow taino indians

the music of afro-cuban that is vibrantly moving

i'm so proud of my country, my culture

not because of an image

but it really symbolizes

Guide that inspired this poem:
