Honor Roll
The blissfulness of youth floats in the air as thousands of kids are cramming through the hallway
Giggling with best friends and making sure to discuss the unimportant things in life
We get to our class but we don’t go in the same door
My friends go into the classroom across the hall
I enter my class alone looking at youthful faces I don’t recognize
Putting my head down walking to the middle row without discussion is routine
My only goal is to make it through the next 100 minutes without being in a constant state of confusion
The later step in my daily routine is feeling stupid
Trying not to ask too many questions while trying to understand
My friends don’t ask how class was when lunch rolls around, it’s something not mentioned
like illness or disease
Tutors and tears
Crying not because I don’t want to do it but because I want to understand
I want to feel smart
Two fingers on the touchpad scrolling and scrolling
Then I see it
My name
On the President’s Honor Roll
The triumph of this story is not that I gained intelligence, but confidence
Worked for the realization you are not only your weaknesses
That everyone is smart in their own way
