Hopeful Changes
Through scars and tears,
ups and downs,
I am walking through the hallways only to hear the sound
of silent cries and unknown fears
within the children who have been bullied for years.
I see the bully stuttering closer.
Fifth graders running for cover only to discover,
nothing can get in the bully’s way;
but suddenly, today is a new day.
The class and I have witnessed,
through suburb strength and courage,
the bully’s best friend emerge.
He is standing in front of the bully,
not in any hurry;
however, only looking to protect
the young girl who has been a complete wreck.
Her father has been in Afghanistan,
attempting to stop the Taliban.
With no friends or comfort throughout the years,
she misses her dad and wishes he would reappear.
Being a social outcast sets in,
making for a droopy chin.
However, today is the day,
when someone finally steps in the bully’s way.
No more sappy faces,
just new beginnings and graces.
The young girl withholds a sheepish grin,
holding her head high while nodding to the boy
who ceased further harassment.
Thanking him in a silent manner,
reassuring herself there are people like daddy
back at home to help protect her.
Fifth grade may have been a blur;
yet, witnessing the bully’s friend stand up
with great courage to protect an innocent girl,
creates tremendous hope for a change in this world.
