Hopi is why I soar

I was told to write a poem,

Except I don't know how to do them.

A poem about a mentor,

Although mine is in my center.

This poem will not always rhyme,

because my mentor brings something new every time.

As I stand on the edge of Shungopavi, Second Mesa,

The light brown rocks glistened in the sunlight, the wind lifting my hair.

I peer down to the cornfields and open desert,

This is who I am, this is my real home!

Hopi it is where I am free from city life judgment,

It is home to my better half of who I am.

The cliffy mesas give me freedom to explore,

A world of peace and silence.

You give me a stage,

to act as someone new.

My walks with a pack of rez dogs by my side,

Provide clarity my mind so desperately needs.

You carry my secrets in your wind,

Far from eavesdropping ears.

You know of my secret depression,

but you never fail to bring me vitality.

You release the inner pain inside,

and remind me of who I really am.

I am Qötsa hon mana, the white bear girl with a plodding gait.

I am Hopi, half but full at heart.

I am Snowclan "small and white, clean and bright."

I am the middle child and grandchild; often forgotten but center of my family.

I am Native.

I am diverse, my music and shows are not common.

I am majestic with brown glistening hair.

I am stressed; college and scholarships exerting a force against my mental equilibrium.

I am guarded, past experiences caging my heart.

I am caring, allowing those dear to me to hold the key to my heart.

I am humble, struggling to write this poem about myself.

I am motivated, wanting the best education and future for myself.

I am a dreamer, to one day work for the FBI

I am one day going to bring change to the World.

I am me and I am what I am.

I do not view myself negatively,

But as a work in progress to bring positivity.

I am Hopi because of my mom,

even representing it at senior prom.

When times get rough,

Hopi reminds me that I am enough.

What began as a simple assignment,

Caused my brain a realignment.

I had to view how Hopi defined me,

Not what its thought to be.

Hopi will forever be my mentor,

After all being Hopi is why I soar.
