Hospital

I feel the glow

Of harsh white hospital lights

I hear the beep of the monitor

That keeps me awake at night

I am poked and prodded and my instinct is fight or flight

But I fall flat

I am in pain

Will I survive this?

This IV is my chain

Sixteen and every breath is a strain

Who would have thought I’d turn out this way

A future once bright is suddenly gray

I’m scared

Undeniably unprepared

Before this I would have dared to be anything

But for now I just hope to stay alive

Birth control pills tried to slay me

Put clots in my lungs, boy did they play me

I wasn’t a kid anymore in this hospital for children

The oldest on my floor and I couldn’t stand it

To see these babies suffering

To see their pain first hand

I had to be strong for them

For those little sweeties sucking their thumb

That first day I grew up

In this medical lock-up
