Anywhere but there

The smell of death and disease

The faces of despair

Anywhere but there

I pleaded

I begged to be taken elsewhere

It was an accident, what he did

But we were already there

The surgical gloves came off

He wasn’t breathing

Hands wiped clean by a cloth

I was no longer pleading

The regret remains

It wasn’t his fault

But I didn’t take the blame

His death was his final insult

And he wouldn’t hurt anyone anymore
