The hour glass

The lights flicker on and off.

The now becomes hazy, but the past is vividly clear.

All the things that could have been but ceased to have been, for the thought of more was always in mind.

Life drains from the inside.

Failure will not leave the mind.

The urge to undo what had already happened is as strong as the lungs yearning to breathe.

But alas they are left without air, for it is merely impossible to go back.

It is impossible to take the opportunities that have been thrown a side.

So many times one has denied precious grains of sand from the hourglass to spend with the one of most importance.

Those grains of sand were used for complete and utter nothing.

No difference has been made, and no difference will be made.

For this sad lonely soul will become part of a depressing collection of others who were incomplete.

All will end this way unless the hourglass is used wisely.

Our sand is disappearing into the great abyss below.

We reach down in an effort to stop the process.

Still , no matter how hard we try, the sand trickles through the gaps in our fingers never to be seen again.

Interesting, descriptive and true... You've done a good job of describing an aspect of life, through metaphor. The poem is clear, the language just right- neither simplistic or overly ornate. Keep writing! We want to see more.
