The House

I am living at the bottom of the sky

And the top of the sea.

Watching the world flash by me.

And sometimes I break things.

I am Persephone, stolen from my garden

And cringing when the phone rings

Laughing only in spring.

I am a child and you’ve asked too much of me

Study hard, go to college

Learning about knowledge.

All I want to know is

Can I stay home Wednesday?

I’ll be a blue jay

Flying high, flying at last

Falling sideways

I am a girl

And sometimes that isn’t fair

“Go worry about curling your hair’

Double standards, painted on the walls,

Came when we bought the house.
