How Did We Get Here

Looking back

Looking at us now

I wonder how

We got here

How did we keep this flame

Burning alive

You don't know me

Like you used to

Or like you think you do

My beautiful stranger

The love

Of my life

I love you still

I always will

But how did we get this far

How did we look past

All those ugly scars

And get here

A jump

And skip away

From who we used to be

But those people

Are right there

Chasing us down

We can run

All over this town

That built us

But every turn

I feel the old pictures burn

I want you

I think I always will

Definitly still do

But how did we get here

From there

Loving you back then

Was so hard

Hard on my heart

You could tear me apart

With one word

You could walk away

So easily

Without anything left to say

Leave me in the dust

And I could run so far

So fast

And yet

We left all that pain in the past

Can't face it

Won't look back

But maybe

The answers I need

The hole I can't fill

Is somewhere waiting

Down that old highway

You love me

I know you do

But do you know

I had to bend in half

Go places I never wanted to go

Inside of me

To get here

To become the girl

You love

Do you ever consider

Did you know

How bad it hurt

How deep the wound was

Did you ever know

What it felt like

Loving you

And how much I was ready to walk away

Did you know

For a time

It was better to let go

Here we are

The love is burning bright

You love me

Day and night

I feel you

More and stronger

Then ever before

We really came far

But these marks

All over my heart

Tell me something

I could never forget

The memories

We regret

The words

We said

They echo in my head

And now here

In our bed

Beside you

I wonder

How did we get here

From way down there
