How do you refuse love?

I don’t remember the first time you said you loved me

But I remember the last

The day you kissed me amongst the shattered glass

I still feel your lips on mine

Your fingertips on my spine

You told me you would always be here

You told me you would always be near

And I believed you

Because we were tangled in my bed sheets

And I felt it in the summer heat

I remember the first time I felt like I had someone

The tingle of your lips left imprints on my skin

That is the day I came undone

That is the day that I let you in

That is the day I learned to sin

Swollen memories cloud the sky

Lying lazy in the summer days

Feeling like we could stay there and die

Because all our cares were thrown away

And all we wanted was to fade away

Florence said the dog days were over

But I wouldn’t believe her until you got sober

Bloody knuckles and bruised cheekbones

I remember when you used to make me feel like I wasn’t alone

Weak fingertips reach for the phone

That isn’t love

Love is a butterfly on a rusty railing

It’s every green leaf in spring

It smells like cherries

And frosty winter mornings.
