How I Learned How To Survive

I slam my body into three-hundred thread count sheets

and I think and I cry and I whine and I weep

everyday

all the night

It's just

How I learned how to survive

and I used to be okay with existing like this

curled up in a ball

hands in a fist

hiding out from it all

until i found out what writing felt like

with a pen between my teeth

held tight

and a poem scawled quickly across my palm

I lick my lips,

apply some balm,

and begin to recite:

"i write to live

and I live to write

to express my wit
my wonder

my anger

my delight

but mostly I write because

it's all that that gives me might

in spite of all this pain

this sadness

and this fright."

And I Know it's simple

And I know it's not the best

But, Oh

do those words feel good rattling in my chest

it's just

how i learned how to survive.
