Human Hypocrisy
We are hypocrites
And we will be the ones
To end this planet.
We will be the ones.
It’s in the way
We invaded an Iraqi city using white phosphorus
Because they were accused of stockpiling
Chemical weapons
It’s in the way
We know child labor is wrong
We would never support it
With a shirt on our back
Made by young suffering hands
Label unchecked
Waiting to buy more
It’s in the way
We believe there is justice
And all criminals get what they deserve
No matter who they are
Unless they’re an actor in a movie or show we like
Or a talented athlete
After all what was she wearing?
It’s in the way
We try to express the opinion
That people need to get off their phones
And enjoy life
In 140 characters or less
It’s in the way
That we truly believe
America is the land of equal opportunity
But mostly if you’re a Caucasian heterosexual male without any disabilities
This is where the underprivileged are given a chance
Unless they are poor because capitalism is the answer
It’s in the way
Our government and religion
Are not at all connected
Because people have the right to believe in any religion
In this one nation
Under God
With liberty and justice for all
It’s in the way
That same nation was built on the idea
That all people have the right to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness
Yet the people who wrote those very words
Took the will the live
Took the freedom
Took the happiness
From their own species
It’s in the way
That we think we know what’s important
So we read headlines online
And pretend to be informed.

Now this is something I have to read about
It’s in the way
We don’t notice how we can slap a dog on the nose when it barks too much
Hurt it to teach it a lesson
But the moment it hurts us
We put it to sleep
It’s in the way
We tear down ecosystems
Throw away homes
Cut through life
To build our precious houses
Yet when we find a wasp’s nest on the porch
Or a mouse in the garage
Or a spider in our bedroom
We kill them
Because this is our home, not theirs
And we can accept this flaw
How can we change it
When it is our nature?
But it is not our nature
This "nature" is killing Nature
The problem is the obsession with ourselves
The common misconception we matter most
We must all preach progressive ideas
Until we all reach progressive ideals.
Until we were hypocrites.
Until we are not the ones.
I will not allow it.
You will not allow it.
We will not be ones.
