Humble Steps

Oh what a humbling feeling it is

to watch all your hard work fall into the wrong hands,

oh, the wretched feeling!

The audacity she had to steal my deserved position,

what I had worked so hard for all year, lost within a minute's vote

Anger seems to be the only living thing inside me

But there is no going back from here, I must hold my head high.

Team captain one day, the next, just a swimmer.

The thought hangs over me, I could not hate my life more in this moment.

But things get better with time,

Stepping back cannot hurt, I have better things to focus on

move on, move on

My race here is finished, but a much greater one promises so much more for me,

I will take my humble steps towards a greater life.

This poem is inspired by my own life experience where I lost a position as team captain that meant a lot to me. This experience pushed me to grow and humble myself to accept a lower position than what I had grown comfortable to. While at first I was so angry and confused, I took a step back and helped myself move on to focus on the bigger picture and mak this scenario, as devastating as it was at the time, a learning and growing experience, and that it was: the next year I focused on academics and friends over sports and made so many beautiful memories, non I would have made with my head in the pool. I am grateful for losing.
